Mitate is a Japanese concept that literally means: “to contemplate a certain object not in its supposedly original form, but as if it were something different; to look at it as if it resembled something else and use it in a different way”.
Within the framework of the Design Capital of Valencia, and as part of the programme of the II Congress “Contemporary Crafts, under Debate”, a seminar was held on the Japanese concept of Mitate and its application to the exploration of new forms and objects for crafts. The idea is to awaken in each craftsperson unexpected or imagined formulations and to experiment with them in the search for new objects or pieces or those whose meaning has been modified. This methodological proposal, which is at the heart of Citā platform, brings us closer to the Japanese concept of Mitate, and through it we set in motion a unique methodology for creative processes that can lead to surprising results.
